VAST Data is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and optimize high-performance distributed systems and core data engines powering the AI infrastructure revolution. The role focuses on building foundational enterprise software that captures, catalogs, refines, and protects massive datasets across data centers, edge, and cloud environments.
Key responsibilities include designing and developing highly scalable, resilient distributed services and storage engines in C/C++; driving architectural discussions around high availability, data consistency, replication, fault tolerance, and multi-node concurrency; optimizing hot execution paths, data structures, memory management, and I/O subsystems for high throughput and minimal latency; investigating and resolving complex production issues spanning application layers, networking protocols, file systems, and OS kernels; and taking end-to-end technical ownership of critical features from design through production rollout and observability.
The engineer will work on one of several specialized teams: Storage Platform (next-generation distributed storage for petabytes of data across large clusters); Data Path (latency-critical hot I/O data path and element store engine with compression and multi-protocol support); Database (core relational database internals, storage engines, B-Tree/LSM-Tree structures, MVCC concurrency control); Kernel (Linux kernel development and block-level storage/file system engineering); Protocols (high-concurrency data/metadata paths replicating AWS S3 behavior); Cloud (cloud-native storage deployment across AWS, Azure, GCP); or Compute Kafka (distributed event-streaming and messaging platforms compatible with Apache Kafka).
Required qualifications include a B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience; strong hands-on C/C++ systems programming expertise including design, coding, integration, and advanced debugging in production; solid understanding of Linux operating systems including process/thread management, synchronization primitives, memory allocation, and I/O troubleshooting; proven track record developing complex backend services or distributed platforms focusing on scalability, concurrency, reliability, and failover; and strong working knowledge of networking concepts including OSI model, TCP/IP, routing, and distributed communication patterns.
