Valar Atomics is building scalable, factory-made advanced nuclear power systems to unlock abundant clean energy for industry, hydrogen production, and next-generation manufacturing. The company is constructing its first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah and is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build the operating system that powers the entire organization.
In this role, you will architect and develop full-stack software systems and infrastructure that accelerate reactor design, fuel manufacturing, licensing, and plant operations. You'll work directly with reactor engineers, systems engineers, licensing teams, manufacturing, supply chain, and operations to understand their workflows and build tooling that makes them faster and more efficient.
Key responsibilities include: architecting scalable full-stack systems; building rich, fast web interfaces for engineers, operators, and technicians; integrating commercial systems (PLM, ERP, MES, document management) via REST, GraphQL, and event-driven interfaces; developing tooling to eliminate manual document handling and preserve traceability; owning deployment, observability, and operational health (CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring, alerting, on-call); designing data models and access boundaries for consistency and auditability; diagnosing and resolving problems across all layers including field commissioning; leveraging AI coding agents as a core tool; and leading design reviews and mentoring as the software team grows.
You'll need 7+ years of production software experience, proficiency in both typed (Java, C#, Go, C++) and untyped (Python, JavaScript) languages, proven system design and architecture skills, end-to-end web application experience, cloud and containerized deployment expertise, strong computer science fundamentals, hands-on experience shipping production work with AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot), and excellent communication skills. A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or equivalent professional experience is required.
Preferred experience includes building internal platforms or engineering tooling at hardware, manufacturing, aerospace, energy, or heavy-industrial companies; integrating PLM, ERP, MES, LIMS, or document control systems; familiarity with regulated environments and standards like NQA-1, GAMP 5, or 21 CFR Part 11; and experience with industrial and operational data systems (historians, time-series stores, OPC UA, MQTT).
The position is based in Torrance, California with regular travel to the Orangeville, Utah pilot plant.
