Tripadvisor Experiences Engineering is seeking a product-focused Senior Software Engineer to join the team building the world's leading marketplace for travel experiences. This is a full-stack role working with Java, SQL, React, AWS, and AI tools, suited for T-shaped engineers who thrive on autonomy and technical leadership.
You will own features end-to-end, leading the design and implementation of highly visible features while balancing security, privacy, and performance. You'll translate high-level business goals into clear technical specifications, often serving as the technical lead for multi-quarter initiatives. The role emphasizes elevating the team by setting code quality standards, leading adoption of review practices, and mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.
Key responsibilities include architecting for resilience by defining operational strategy and designing fault-tolerant systems, proactively identifying structural risks, and setting team-wide standards for automation, monitoring, and stability. You'll leverage AI tools strategically to plan approaches, decompose ambiguous work, and establish new standards for reliability. Additionally, you'll actively identify opportunities to simplify, consolidate, or retire legacy code to reduce complexity and increase team velocity.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field. Required skills include deep understanding of distributed systems and concurrent programming, strong experience in modern backend languages (Java, C#, Go, Python), and familiarity with modern front-end frameworks. You should be fluent with AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude, Codex), comfortable navigating ambiguity, and skilled at collaborative leadership across disciplines.
Experience with NoSQL databases, GraphQL, Kafka, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), or building tools that provide leverage to engineering teams is valued. Tripadvisor embraces a remote-first working model with periodic in-person gatherings at office hubs in London, Oxford, Krakow, or Lisbon. Candidates should be within commutable distance (generally up to 1.5 hours) of one of these offices.
