Sofar Ocean is building sensing systems and cloud software to monitor and improve ocean health. You will be a key contributor to frontend and backend engineering on the Spotter team, a cross-functional group designing sensing systems and applications that connect them.
You'll work on spotter.sofarocean.com and APIs that interact with hardware products including Spotter, Smart Mooring, and next-generation platforms. The tech stack includes React (frontend), Typescript/Express/Postgres (backend). You'll own features across the full stack, from data storage to UIs, and collaborate directly with hardware and firmware engineers.
Recent team work includes performance optimization for real-time streaming data visualization (React component invalidation, multi-layer caching, database indexing) and automation of remote hardware device configuration. You'll be part of a 100-person growing startup with a mission-driven focus on ocean and planetary health.
Requirements: 5+ years professional software development in modern cloud environments; significant experience with Typescript, React, and Postgres; demonstrated ability to own feature lifecycles end-to-end from conception through architecture, development, testing, CI/CD, monitoring, and optimization.
Bonus: ocean passion, AWS expertise (ECS, ALB, CloudFront, RDS, ElastiCache, Lambda, IAM), complex data visualization experience, acoustics knowledge, or prior hardware/firmware collaboration.
Role is hybrid, requiring at least 3 days per week onsite at Pier 28 office in San Francisco Bay. Reports to Senior Engineering Manager. Comprehensive benefits include health/dental/vision insurance, flexible PTO, and lunch provided 3 days per week.
