New Relic is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join the NR Lens team, which builds a Federated Data Platform—a distributed SQL query engine enabling customers to connect external data sources (Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Google Sheets, AWS CloudWatch) and query them directly from New Relic.
You will design, build, and maintain cloud-native Java microservices in the NR Lens query path, including the SQL Gateway, Query Gateway, and data source connector plugins. Key responsibilities include developing and hardening JDBC connector integrations with connection lifecycle management, credential handling, query pushdown optimization, and security validation. You'll improve query reliability and performance across a multi-tenant distributed SQL deployment serving 50+ customers, build and operate services on AWS (EKS, IAM/STS, S3) using infrastructure-as-code practices, and implement security controls for user-supplied connection parameters including JDBC URL validation and SSRF prevention.
Additional work includes building materialized view scheduling and lifecycle management features, designing deployment automation with canary deployments and progressive rollouts, collaborating with the NRDB/Dirac team on internal connector bridging, and participating in on-call rotation for production systems.
Required qualifications: 5+ years of professional Java development, strong experience building cloud-native applications on AWS, designing and operating containerized microservices on Kubernetes, building and operating distributed systems at scale, familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and CI/CD pipelines, AWS security patterns, observability tooling (SLOs/SLIs, dashboards, alerting), debugging production issues across multi-service architectures, and experience with gRPC or Thrift-based service communication and GraphQL APIs.
Nice-to-have skills include understanding of SQL query execution (parsing, planning, optimization), JDBC driver and connection pooling experience, distributed query engine or SQL-on-anything platform experience, plugin/connector development for distributed query engines, and knowledge of RBAC/authorization systems in multi-tenant SaaS environments.
