New Relic is building an intelligent observability platform that empowers companies to thrive in an AI-first world. This Senior Software Engineer role is part of the Personalization team, which is launching a greenfield project to understand and adapt user behavior across classic interfaces and agentic conversations.
You will own the architecture and technical direction of a significant, moderately-scoped service within the behavioral data platform, from design through delivery. Your responsibilities include championing the delivery of full components, collaborating with product managers and stakeholders to clarify requirements and translate them into clear technical plans, and identifying and mitigating technical risks before they become production issues.
You will facilitate healthy, data-driven design debates within the team, ensuring multiple options are explored and trade-offs are weighed before committing. You'll provide technical direction and mentorship to less experienced engineers, act as an expert operator of the services you own, and contribute to improving team processes for regular, incremental quality software delivery.
The role emphasizes active adoption of AI coding assistants and agents in your workflow, helping set the standard for team adoption. You'll also help organize and lead technical communities of practice beyond your immediate team.
The tech stack centers on Java 25, Spring, GraphQL, NoSQL, Kubernetes, Kafka, and AWS.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Deep, hands-on expertise in Java and backend service design, with a proven track record of delivering production code following solid security, reliability, and maintainability practices
- Experience building and operating Kafka-based streaming pipelines and services in AWS production environments
- Strong experience with distributed systems, concurrency, and scaling, including diagnosing and resolving complex production issues
- Track record of mentoring engineers and providing constructive direction in code reviews and design discussions
- Comfortable partnering directly with product managers and stakeholders to shape technical scope from ambiguous requirements
- Sound judgment in selecting the right approach on issues of moderate to broad scope
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to build consensus across differing technical viewpoints
- Proficiency in English
BONUS EXPERIENCE:
- Designing GraphQL APIs or microservices architectures at scale
- Familiarity with Kubernetes concepts and production behavior reasoning
- Experience with distributed data processing (Spark, Hadoop/Hive, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift) or ETL/orchestration tools (Airflow)
- Deep understanding of data modeling principles (dimensional modeling, normalization), especially for behavioral or user segmentation
- Experience evaluating, benchmarking, or building custom agentic AI tools, prompt workflows, or developer automation
- Exposure to recommendation systems or building context for agentic/LLM-based experiences
- SQL performance tuning or data visualization tools (Tableau, Looker)
- Track record of technical mentorship beyond immediate team
