Monzo is a digital bank on a mission to make money work for everyone. This Senior Backend Engineer role is based in Barcelona (hybrid, 3 days/week in office) and offers the opportunity to work on a modern banking platform serving millions of customers across personal accounts, business banking, savings, investments, and credit products.
You'll join one of Monzo's engineering collectives—Core Banking, Business Banking, Wealth, Borrowing, Growth, Payments, Platform, Fincrime, Security, or Expansion—working in cross-functional squads alongside product managers, designers, mobile engineers, data analysts, and other specialists. The role focuses on backend systems that power customer-facing products and underlying infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include designing and building resilient, distributed backend systems; collaborating with your squad to solve complex technical challenges; contributing to open-source projects; and maintaining a product mindset focused on customer outcomes and data-informed decisions.
You should have strong experience building backend systems for technology products, comfort with ambiguity in a fast-moving environment, and familiarity with strongly-typed languages (Go, Java, C, Scala, etc.). Experience with distributed systems and resilient software architecture is valued. Monzo does not require formal qualifications or degrees; they prioritize learning ability, product thinking, and technical depth.
The role is positioned at L50 in Monzo's engineering progression framework. Compensation includes base salary (experience-dependent), performance-based incentive awards, and benefits. This is a full-time, permanent position.
