GovWell is an AI-powered operating system transforming how local governments serve communities. Founded in 2023, the company has raised $35M and powers 5,000+ mission-critical processes across 35+ states, helping municipalities cut internal processing time for permits and licenses by up to 95%. As a Senior Software Engineer reporting to the CTO and Co-Founder, you'll build deeply configurable full-stack features that serve thousands of municipalities with different regulatory requirements. Your work spans intuitive resident-facing interfaces to scalable backend services powering government workflows. Key responsibilities include: building and shipping full-stack features across the platform; designing the configuration layer that allows one system to adapt across diverse municipal setups without hardcoding customer-specific logic; owning product areas end-to-end with focus on reliability, maintainability, and performance in production government environments; leveraging customer feedback and production data to prioritize improvements; and contributing to technical design discussions that shape the engineering team's approach. You'll work with a modern tech stack including React, TypeScript, Node.js, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, RedwoodJS, AWS, and OpenAI APIs. The role offers real technical variance—one week tackling GIS edge cases, the next working on fee-schedule logic—rather than narrow, repetitive work. The ideal candidate has 3-5+ years of full-stack development experience in high-growth startups or enterprise/consumer applications. You should have owned large product areas end-to-end, demonstrated strong product instincts by understanding customer problems deeply, and be excited about working with latest AI models. You align with GovWell's core values and thrive in environments combining technical depth with direct customer impact. Compensation includes competitive base salary, equity/stock options, medical/dental/vision insurance, 401(k), and flexible PTO. The team works hybrid with 3+ days per week in-person at the New York City office.
