Fonoa is seeking a Staff Engineer to drive technical excellence and system-wide improvements across the organization. In this role, you will own complex, cross-team problems that lack clear definition, shape technical direction across multiple domains, and help teams build better systems. Your impact comes primarily from influencing decisions, design, and execution at scale rather than individual code contribution.
Key responsibilities include taking ownership of ambiguous, high-impact problems; defining technical direction and driving system design across domains; identifying and addressing systemic issues early; simplifying complexity through better architecture and patterns; improving how teams build by raising standards, tooling, and practices; mentoring engineers and contributing to hiring and team growth; and ensuring systems are reliable, scalable, and built for long-term evolution.
You will focus on high-leverage problems and create clarity in ambiguous situations, aligning teams around shared technical vision. You will improve not just code quality but how teams design and build systems, making others more effective through guidance and direction. Operating with long-term thinking, you will balance today's needs with future scale while adopting emerging AI technologies and fostering a culture of innovation.

Required experience includes strong backend systems design and operation at scale, proven ability to work on ambiguous high-impact problems, track record of influencing technical decisions beyond your immediate team, ability to balance speed, quality, and maintainability, experience mentoring engineers and improving team practices, and fostering curiosity and experimentation. The tech stack includes Node.js and Go for backend, React and TypeScript for frontend, and GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, and Postgres for infrastructure.
