Salary: USD 130,000 - 180,000 / annual
Taskrabbit is a marketplace platform connecting people with Taskers for everyday home services like furniture assembly, handyman work, and moving help. The company is owned by IKEA and operates across the US and EU with a distributed, hybrid workforce.
You'll join the Tasker & Supply team as a Senior Software Engineer, responsible for raising the quality bar across the marketplace ecosystem. Your focus will be on the tasker experience—onboarding, category/skill eligibility, and marketplace matching—built on a Ruby on Rails engine architecture. You'll also lead the migration of service contracts toward strongly-typed TypeScript bindings.
Key responsibilities include:
**Architect**: Define multi-quarter technical roadmaps for onboarding, category eligibility, geography, and matching. Drive strategy, tackle tech debt, and evolve engine boundaries, gateway contracts, and data models alongside the engineering manager and architects.
**Tech Lead**: Lead complex, cross-team initiatives around marketplace liquidity and supply-demand matching. Influence multiple teams without direct authority.
**Solver**: Transform ambiguous, high-stakes business goals into clear technical strategies, designs, and experiments.
**Operational Excellence**: Improve reliability and observability (Datadog, Kafka) for onboarding, matching, and supply-side systems. Own production debugging and drive systemic fixes.
**Multiplier**: Be the go-to Ruby/Sorbet expert. Champion testing and AI practices, mentor engineers, and write documentation.
**AI & Contract Binding**: Lead adoption of Spec-Driven Development with AI tools and help move service integrations toward strongly-typed TypeScript contracts.
You bring 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of leading complex work and influencing multiple teams. You have strong expertise in Ruby on Rails and typed Ruby (Sorbet), working knowledge of TypeScript (especially contract-driven type generation), solid SQL and data modeling skills (MySQL), and hands-on experience with async/event-driven systems (Kafka) and service/engine-boundary architecture. You've built and owned observability and alerting for critical systems, with strong communication skills and real ownership over systems affecting marketplace supply and tasker trust.
Bonus experience includes Spec Driven Development, hands-on AI tools, replatforming legacy monolith code into cleanly-bounded engines, and moving typed backends toward TypeScript-bound contracts.
The role is hybrid, requiring 2 days in office at the San Francisco hub (130 Sutter St) every Tuesday and Wednesday. Note: visa sponsorship is not available; candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US without employer sponsorship.
