Clutch is Canada's largest online used car retailer, backed by top-tier investors including Canaan and D1 Capital. Founded in 2017 and headquartered in Toronto, the company has been recognized as one of Canada's Top Growing Companies and a LinkedIn Top Canadian Startup. This Senior Software Engineer role is for someone who owns outcomes end-to-end. You'll work directly with stakeholders to understand problems, shape solutions, design user experiences, and build scalable products using strong engineering principles and AI-powered development tools. The team believes advances in AI are fundamentally changing product development—traditional handoffs between product, design, and engineering are giving way to smaller, faster teams that move from concept to production in days instead of months. Key responsibilities include: - Own products from discovery through delivery, partnering with stakeholders to understand problems and measure business impact - Design technical solutions and build scalable software using modern engineering practices - Influence product direction, architecture, workflows, and user experience - Build reliable, scalable systems while optimizing performance and resolving bottlenecks - Design and evolve APIs, database schemas, and system architecture with long-term scalability in mind - Use AI as part of your everyday engineering workflow to prototype, accelerate development, and iterate faster - Evaluate and adopt new tools, AI capabilities, and engineering practices - Make thoughtful technical decisions balancing speed, quality, and maintainability - Collaborate through design discussions, code reviews, and knowledge sharing - Continuously improve systems, tools, and developer experience The tech stack includes TypeScript, React, Express, PostgreSQL, and AWS, though the company values exceptional engineers over perfect technology matches. You should have 4+ years of professional software engineering experience, a track record of shipping production software, and experience with frontend, backend, or full-stack development. Experience with modern languages (TypeScript, Python, Go, Java, C#, Rust, Ruby), relational databases, API design, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) is expected. You should be comfortable using AI as a force multiplier, working directly with stakeholders in ambiguous environments, and caring equally about business outcomes and technical excellence.
