Beacon Biosignals is transforming precision medicine for the brain through at-home EEG platforms and digital diagnostics. The company serves life sciences partners in clinical development and operates a diagnostics business combining EEG and cardiopulmonary signals for sleep and CNS disorder assessments.
You will join the Datastore team as a Senior Software Engineer, focusing on backend systems and data infrastructure at the heart of Beacon's platform. The Datastore defines the foundational data model and serves as the centralized repository and GraphQL API for brain data from clinical studies, supporting analytical tools, services, and applications used by scientists, clinicians, and partners.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and scale backend systems for data infrastructure: PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, and GraphQL APIs
- Lead design and integration of new services and components for data and event processing
- Own pipelines that deliver dataset snapshots into the data warehouse
- Collaborate with platform and application teams to implement APIs enabling new clinical workflows
- Partner with product managers, scientific stakeholders, and development teams to translate requirements into platform solutions
- Draft RFCs to lead complex feature discovery and technical design phases
- Maintain high standards for data integrity, design soundness, and system maintainability
- Ensure correctness when data moves between systems: completeness, idempotency, and predictable behavior under partial failure
- Improve operational robustness through documentation, tools, and dashboards
Beacon maintains office hubs in Boston, New York, and Paris, but this role is fully remote for US-based candidates. The company emphasizes asynchronous work practices to support a first-class remote experience.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of backend development experience, including at least 2 years focused on data platforms and backend infrastructure for data-centric applications (transactional systems, event pipelines, APIs)
- Strong proficiency in SQL with production experience using PostgreSQL as an application database; ability to write and tune queries by hand and reason about schema design, indexes, and query plans
- Hands-on experience with data streaming and event processing using Kafka or equivalent (RabbitMQ, Pulsar, Amazon Kinesis)
- Proficiency in Julia or Python (Julia experience is a strong plus but not required)
- Experience deploying and operating services in containerized environments with familiarity in Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform and/or Helm)
- Experience with GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js); GraphQL is the Datastore's primary interface
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work across disciplines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in asynchronous and remote environments
- Self-directed approach with track record of thriving in hybrid or fully remote teams
