SoundCloud is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Anti-Abuse Team, responsible for building and operating an abuse prevention platform at global scale. The role combines long-term platform architecture work with rapid response to emerging abuse vectors, offering significant end-to-end ownership from problem identification through solution delivery.
You will build and evolve reusable platform capabilities and services that enable other teams to detect and respond to emerging abuse patterns. Key responsibilities include shaping platform architecture and technical strategy while balancing long-term scalability with rapid responses to emerging challenges. You'll partner with Product, Analytics, Trust & Safety professionals, and Engineering teams to identify and address abuse patterns across the organization. The role requires owning problems end-to-end, making pragmatic technical decisions that balance cost, latency, complexity, scalability and maintainability, and driving architecture discussions to improve engineering practices and tooling. You'll debug complex issues across data pipelines and distributed systems, continuously learn industry best practices in abuse prevention, and participate in on-call rotation to ensure system reliability.
The Anti-Abuse Team operates a substantial suite of event-based services combining specialized and generalized detection approaches to tackle complex architectural problems where scale, adaptability and fast decision-making are critical. You'll work in a self-sufficient team passionate about abuse prevention, with the opportunity to solve both strategic and time-sensitive engineering problems.
The role is based in either the Berlin or London office with a flexible hybrid work culture.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Extensive professional software engineering experience, including significant experience designing and operating distributed, event-driven backend systems at scale
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform and cloud-native environments such as AWS or GCP
- Experience building distributed data processing and ETL pipelines, metrics and supporting ML infrastructure
- Experience with microservices, SQL and NoSQL databases, container technologies
- Strong professional experience with Go; experience with Scala or another language is a plus
- Strong SQL skills for massive datasets (e.g., BigQuery or similar)
- Experience designing APIs and backend services consumed by multiple client platforms
- Knowledge of different API communication patterns (e.g., gRPC, GraphQL)
- Care about the craft of software engineering: continuous delivery, defensive programming, automated testing, security, clean code principles
- Strong sense of ownership and comfort navigating ambiguity in fast-moving environments
- Humble, collaborative, team-first mindset with eagerness to learn and support colleagues
- Preferred: Experience in abuse prevention, fraud detection or Trust & Safety
- Preferred: Experience using AI-assisted development tools
