Salary: USD 200,000 - 230,000 / annual
Astronomer is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Airflow Infrastructure team, part of Astro, the company's flagship cloud platform. You'll build the critical infrastructure layer connecting the open-source Apache Airflow ecosystem to enterprise-grade, massively scalable cloud infrastructure. Your work will directly influence how global organizations orchestrate data pipelines at scale—making them faster, more reliable, and easier to manage.
Key responsibilities include engineering high-quality, maintainable backend services with comprehensive testing; partnering with engineers, product, customer reliability support, and leadership to define system evolution; conducting code reviews and providing constructive feedback; optimizing performance, reliability, and scalability of existing services; investigating and prototyping improvements to user experience; creating and maintaining technical documentation; and participating in on-call rotation to troubleshoot and resolve incidents.
You bring 5+ years of experience building and delivering SaaS products, strong proficiency in Python or Golang, hands-on Kubernetes experience, solid understanding of RESTful APIs and distributed systems, comfort with testing frameworks like pytest, and strong written and verbal communication skills. You're passionate about reliability and operational excellence, able to scope work and coordinate cross-functionally, and follow software development best practices including code reviews, testing, CI/CD, version control, automation, and debugging. You adapt well to change and rapid development pace, with a proactive, ownership-focused approach to identifying and addressing issues.
Bonus experience includes familiarity with Apache Airflow. The role operates on a hybrid model with at least 3 days per week in the New York City office.
