Lightning AI, founded in 2019 and backed by Coatue, Index Ventures, and Bain Capital Ventures, is building an end-to-end platform for developing, training, and deploying AI systems. The company recently merged with Voltage Park to combine developer-first software with cost-efficient, large-scale compute infrastructure.
The Agents team is building the infrastructure powering the next generation of AI applications. As AI agents move from prototypes to production, developers need reliable systems for orchestrating workflows, coordinating models, executing tools, and managing long-running state. This role focuses on providing platform abstractions that make building production-ready agentic applications as straightforward as deploying modern software services.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Agents team, you will design and build backend systems that power Lightning AI's agent platform. Key responsibilities include:
- Design and build backend services for AI agent orchestration and execution
- Develop scalable APIs and platform capabilities for tool use, workflow orchestration, memory, and state management
- Build reliable infrastructure enabling long-running, distributed AI workflows
- Partner with product, research, and platform engineering teams to bring new agent capabilities into production
- Improve platform reliability, observability, and performance as customer workloads scale
- Evaluate and strengthen technical architecture, engineering processes, and developer tooling
- Maintain high standards for software quality through testing, automation, continuous delivery, and technical debt management
- Mentor engineers on system design, distributed systems, and backend engineering
You'll work closely with engineers across Core Platform, Training & Experimentation, Sandboxes, and Optimized Compute teams. The role requires a minimum of 2 in-office days per week at one of the San Francisco, NYC, or London office hubs, with occasional team and company offsites. The company is not currently providing visa sponsorship for this position.
