Affirm is building its own bank and seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join a small, AI-native engineering team that owns the systems behind Affirm Bank. This is a rare opportunity to shape a new business from its first systems—a startup-like build inside an established company with access to Affirm's brand, distribution, and consumer reach. You will own bank systems end-to-end, including cloud infrastructure, data platform, durable workflow orchestration, core banking configuration, CI/CD, networking, and the Bank-Affirm Inc integration. The role demands generalist breadth and hands-on ownership through launch and operations. You'll be a force multiplier on a small team, setting code review and design standards, improving documentation for examiner readiness, and lifting the bar on team effectiveness. Key responsibilities include shipping AI-first by leveraging AI tools and agentic workflows as multipliers for code, design review, and operations. You'll own vendor relationships end-to-end—integration, operations, escalation, and audit—since the bank's tech stack is intentionally vendor-leveraged. Building for examiners is critical: partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Internal Audit to factor in compliance from day one, writing decisions and runbooks to audit-ready standards. You'll own the operational posture of your work, setting up monitoring, alerting, and practices that keep systems reliable and observable. Influence extends beyond the team to non-engineering stakeholders (bank executives, Compliance, Risk) and engineers outside the bank, shaping how cleanly the integration boundary works. As the team grows, you'll help establish engineering practices and mentor new engineers. Required: 6+ years of software engineering experience with senior-strong, hands-on builder credentials and a track record of end-to-end ownership through launch and operations. You're comfortable in ambiguity, move fast, ask hard questions, and take ownership before being asked. You have a bias toward simplicity and experience operating in lean engineering cultures with high bars and intentionally tight surface areas. You're fluent with AI-assisted development tools (Claude, Cursor, Codex, agentic workflows) and actively push yourself and your team to use them as multipliers. Strong systems thinking across public cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, and financial services is essential.
