As a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), you will be a software engineer first, building production-grade test infrastructure and tooling rather than manual test cases. You'll take loosely-defined problems and solve them independently, making technical decisions on framework and strategy across the entire testing pyramid alongside engineering leadership.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and maintaining test infrastructure, release orchestration tooling, and performance testing systems as production-grade software
- Designing and building test automation frameworks, including migration from Cypress to Playwright
- Owning core infrastructure such as test environment provisioning, parallelization, and CI/CD test execution at scale
- Defining the right automation framework and strategy at each testing layer (unit, integration, API, end-to-end) to optimize coverage speed and reliability
- Partnering on release orchestration tooling that manages build promotion, deployment gating, and rollback across environments
- Building observability into test frameworks to track flakiness, execution time, and failure patterns
- Mentoring other engineers on writing better tests, tooling, and infrastructure code
You should have 5+ years of experience as a software engineer building test infrastructure, developer tooling, or release engineering systems. Strong programming ability in JavaScript/TypeScript is essential, with the ability to design backend services and tooling from scratch. Experience building or scaling CI/CD systems, release orchestration pipelines, and test infrastructure at a systems level is required. You understand the testing pyramid, have experience with observability/monitoring in test frameworks, and are comfortable with AI tools in quality workflows. You thrive in fast-moving engineering environments and enjoy solving hard infrastructure problems independently.
Tech stack includes JavaScript/NodeJS/TypeScript, Cypress, Playwright, Jest, Postman/REST Assured, performance testing frameworks (Locust/Gatlin/JMeter/k6), CI/CD tools (Jenkins/GitHub Actions/ArgoCD/Spinnaker/Harness), Datadog, MongoDB, Kubernetes, and AWS/Google Cloud.
The role is based in Austin, Texas, with openness to remote arrangements for qualified candidates. Qualia also has offices in San Francisco, California and Concord, New Hampshire.
