Wealthsimple is Canada's leading financial innovator serving 4+ million Canadians with $125B+ in assets under administration. The STAR team (Statements, Tax slips, and Revenue) sits within the Book of Record—the ledger of truth for every dollar moving through the platform. This team of 7 developers owns the systems that generate 20M+ monthly client statements, tax slips filed across three North American tax authorities, government grant processing, and interest/fee calculations for all clients.
In this role, you will design, build, and operate the pipelines and services that power millions of statements, payouts, and tax filings. You'll set architectural direction for the domain, proposing designs and guiding technical tradeoffs to ensure consistent choices across services and pipelines. You own significant scope end-to-end—from technical design through production reliability and regulatory deadline accountability.
You'll evolve the data architecture to improve accuracy, scale, and consistency across all client-facing outputs, working toward a single source of truth. You'll raise quality standards through code review, testing frameworks, and design conversations that catch issues before they reach clients or regulators. You'll mentor developers through pairing, code review, and real-time feedback, and help shape how the team builds with AI-assisted tooling while maintaining rigorous quality standards.
The tech stack spans Ruby services, Python data pipelines (including PySpark), and Airflow orchestration. You'll need 7+ years of backend engineering experience building and operating scalable production systems, with a track record of accountability during peak load or high-consequence deadlines. Strong system design and architectural judgment are essential—you make sound tradeoffs, communicate them clearly, and can hold the shape of a system across services and pipelines.
You'll bring strong data engineering skills at scale, including distributed compute (Spark or comparable) and data pipeline design, plus solid Postgres experience designing schemas and queries that reliably serve bulk data to clients. Comfort working across Ruby, Python, and workflow orchestration (Airflow or equivalent) is required; depth in one language with willingness to ramp on others matters more than exact stack match. You should have enthusiasm for AI-assisted development with the engineering judgment to review and hold quality on what those tools produce.
Nice-to-haves include fintech, banking, brokerage, or regulated domain experience; familiarity with tax reporting, statement generation, ledgers, or financial-correctness systems; exposure to government or regulatory interaction; and knowledge of medallion architecture, dbt, or structured data modeling approaches.
