MaintainX, now part of Autodesk Operations Solutions, is seeking a Senior Software Developer to design and build the company's end-to-end search and retrieval platform. You will own the full stack—from indexing pipelines and ranking systems to AI-facing query layers—serving a platform used by 13,000+ customers including Duracell, McDonald's, Shell, DHL, and Volvo across 13.9 million managed assets.
In this role, you will partner with product and domain experts to model search across core entities like work orders, assets, and procedures, ensuring high-relevance results. You'll ship fast, iterate rapidly, and gather feedback to improve the platform continuously. You'll operate and optimize distributed systems for reliability, performance, and scalability under real-world load, while driving architectural decisions that balance correctness, performance, and long-term maintainability.
Key responsibilities include owning integrations between search systems and upstream data sources, exploring semantic search and vector retrieval using modern ML tooling, and participating in on-call duties (currently business hours). You'll also lead platform engineering managers across multiple teams and present technical priorities to executive stakeholders.
You bring hands-on production experience designing, building, and operating search systems end-to-end using technologies like Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Lucene, or Solr. You understand embeddings, chunking, and retrieval strategies, and are comfortable with search-specific tuning (analyzers, BM25, shard sizing, cluster health, relevance optimization). You can take systems from implementation through deployment and production operation, working across backend services, data pipelines, and integration points.
Nice-to-have skills include experience evaluating search relevance using qualitative and quantitative metrics, shipping AI-powered or LLM-integrated backend systems, comfort with modern AI tools (GPT, Copilot, Cursor), understanding of multi-tenancy and data security (ACLs, field-level access controls), and building observability and success metrics into systems.
