As a Senior Software Developer on the Cards team, you will own meaningful end-to-end slices of the card stack—from card issuance and authorization through transaction processing, disputes, rewards, and card lifecycle management. This is not a features-on-top-of-a-BaaS role; Wealthsimple is building card infrastructure in-house, and you will have the opportunity to say you built it.
Key responsibilities include:
- Shape and own greenfield work in the early-stage card program with significant building ahead
- Own complex, end-to-end projects across the card stack from technical design through implementation, launch, and iteration
- Build and improve backend systems powering card products with focus on reliability, performance, and correctness
- Work on core card infrastructure: card issuance, tokenization, authorization flows, BIN management, transaction processing, card lifecycle management, and dispute infrastructure
- Make thoughtful architectural decisions balancing speed, quality, and scale
- Partner closely with Product and Design to clarify goals, surface trade-offs, and deliver outcomes
- Build with the reliability and observability standards that card journeys demand
- Leverage AI-centric workflows to ship faster and safer
- Raise the technical bar through design reviews, code reviews, documentation, pairing, and mentorship
- Help create a team culture of clear communication, rapid learning, and shared ownership
You bring 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of shipping production-grade systems. You have experience building and owning backend systems in payments, cards, or financial services, ideally with direct exposure to card issuance, authorization, payment rails, or card lifecycle management. You have strong backend engineering fundamentals, understand how money moves and systems fail, and know how to build for correctness at scale.
You have a maker-owner mindset, seeking a place to plant a flag and shape a growing domain over time. You're comfortable with ambiguity and greenfield work, having built something from 0→1 before. You use an AI-first development workflow without compromising rigor, moving beyond AI as autocomplete into genuinely agentic workflows. You have product judgment, care about member problems, and know when to iterate versus invest long-term. You navigate ambiguity, define paths forward, and bring others along through clear communication. You have technical leadership and mentorship instincts and bring a collaborative, low-ego approach to engineering.
Nice-to-have experience includes working directly with card networks or processors, building card infrastructure in-house, Ruby on Rails or comparable backend language experience, React/React Native, and experience in fast-moving environments with broad engineer ownership.
