Wealthsimple is Canada's leading financial innovator serving 4+ million Canadians with $155B+ in assets under administration. The company offers managed investing, trading, cryptocurrency, tax filing, and spending/saving products. You'll join the Core Balances team as a Senior Software Developer, owning backend systems that track client money in real time. These services sit on the critical path for nearly every Wealthsimple product and must be both fast and correct. You'll design and build services handling real-time balances, reservations, and financial activity recording, partnering closely with Product and neighboring engineering teams. Key responsibilities include: designing and operating backend services for real-time balances and financial activity; owning meaningful scope end-to-end from technical design through production operation; solving hard problems around real-time correctness, low latency, and high availability; evolving the architecture to consolidate overlapping services and data models while maintaining live financial systems without downtime; raising quality and operational excellence standards; mentoring engineers through pairing and code review; and leveraging AI-assisted tooling to ship faster and safely. You bring 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating critical production systems. You have strong backend engineering skills, experience with highly available and low-latency services, and solid understanding of system design and trade-offs. The team primarily works in Kotlin on the JVM with Kafka and GraphQL; strong Java experience translates well. You take production ownership seriously, work well in mature codebases, write well-tested and maintainable code, and communicate clearly with Product and engineering teams. You're curious about the financial reality behind systems and enthusiastic about AI-assisted development. Nice-to-have experience includes fintech/banking/trading backgrounds, familiarity with ledgers and financial-correctness problems, event-driven architecture and stream processing (Kafka, Flink), GraphQL APIs and Apollo Federation, relational database performance at scale (Postgres), and experience with significant migrations on high-traffic systems.
