Salary: USD 182,800 - 247,300 / annual
Duolingo is seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join its platform engineering organization in New York. In this role, you will partner with product and platform engineering teams to ensure Duolingo's distributed systems—serving over 500 million learners globally—are built, maintained, and operated with exceptional quality and measurable scalability.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with internal teams to identify and eliminate sources of instability in distributed systems, driving operational excellence across the platform
- Supporting core infrastructure by understanding, diagnosing, and debugging systems in production environments
- Providing system design consulting, developing software platforms and frameworks, and conducting launch reviews and root cause analysis
- Establishing and maintaining sustainable postmortem and incident response practices
- Advocating for and implementing changes that improve reliability, scalability, and engineering velocity
- Reducing operational toil through iterative development of tooling and automation
- Working closely with engineering teams on feature releases and becoming a subject-matter authority on critical services
Required qualifications:
- 5+ years of hands-on SRE or DevOps experience with products serving millions of users
- Demonstrated expertise identifying and solving issues in large-scale distributed systems
- Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, Python, or Go
- Strong understanding of containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, Mesos, Nomad, etc.)
Preferred qualifications include experience improving automation and tooling to reduce maintenance burden, driving incident response process improvements, and troubleshooting reliability issues in DynamoDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases.
