Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, delivering empirical data via a cloud-based platform to commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. The company controls every component from hardware design through software engineering.
You will join Planet's Direct Access Service Infrastructure team, contributing to a next-generation Constellation as a Service platform that extends beyond traditional cloud offerings to support on-premises deployments. Your core responsibility is building, deploying, and operating critical compute software that enables end-to-end imaging operations within customer on-premises and cloud environments.
Key responsibilities include architecting and deploying computing services and infrastructure for satellite operations and image processing platforms; designing novel systems for air-gapped deployments at scale; clarifying requirements from cross-functional stakeholders (internal and external); managing deployments, service orchestration, and documentation; scaling architecture while maintaining service availability; improving reliability by resolving edge cases and writing tests; and participating in on-call rotations.
You bring 6+ years of experience building cloud-native services, with a Bachelor's in Computer Science or equivalent. Required expertise includes deploying and maintaining bare-metal and cloud Kubernetes (Talos, RKE2, Proxmox, k3s); Infrastructure-as-Code and GitOps tools (Terraform, Ansible, Helm, Kustomize); CI/CD platforms (Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, Argo CD, CircleCI); building highly available, performant services; understanding hardware and network implications of on-premises compute; platform optimization in constrained environments; observability tools (Alloy, Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry); and advanced Python and Bash skills.
Standout qualifications include CUDA-based GPU program experience and security expertise in sensitive environments (zero-trust architectures, Kubernetes hardening, security audits, air-gapped deployments).
This is a full-time remote position based in the US or Canada. If located near an office (San Francisco, Washington DC, or European locations), you are expected to work on-site 3 days per week.
