As Senior Scientist in R&D, you will lead the development and optimization of DNA/RNA extraction and sequencing workflows to build the most diverse biological database in the world. Your focus will be on metagenomic recovery from challenging sample types including water, soil, sediments, faeces, and biofilms. You'll work across the full sequencing pipeline from extraction through library preparation, with expertise in both short and long-read technologies and high molecular weight (HMW) extraction methods.
Key responsibilities include: developing and optimizing metagenomic extraction methods for diverse sample types, particularly low-biomass and inhibitor-rich matrices; creating DNA/RNA purification methods using various chemistries and in-house development; applying and developing virology-focused workflows; designing well-controlled experiments to compare extraction and sequencing approaches; defining success criteria and supporting method transfer into production; prioritizing development work based on scientific value and scalability; working within CLS 2 environments with genetically modified organisms; implementing and developing NGS library building methods; mentoring team members; and horizon-scanning for emergent methodologies.
You'll contribute directly to the Trillion Gene Atlas Project, transforming global samples into high-quality biological data. The role is laboratory-based with project ownership, offering close collaboration with the Collaborations team coordinating global sample collection and the Data teams defining targeted methods. You'll work in a data-first environment using experimental and sequencing metrics to guide method development and prioritization.
