IonQ is seeking a Senior Scientist in Quantum Applications to develop end-to-end quantum solutions that drive scientific and commercial impact. You will be part of a cross-functional team working on the world's most powerful trapped-ion quantum computers, collaborating with customers and partners to solve complex, real-world problems. Key responsibilities include developing, implementing, and optimizing novel quantum algorithms and applications in areas such as computational chemistry, optimization, and machine learning. You will work directly with customers and partners to define and solve problems of genuine interest using IonQ's quantum computing platform. The role emphasizes rigorous benchmarking of solutions, publishing results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and contributing to team culture through a landmark initiative with the University of Chicago. You should have 6+ years of professional experience (or equivalent education/experience combination) with demonstrated expertise in Python and/or C++, and hands-on experience with quantum SDKs like Qiskit. A strong track record of delivering innovative quantum solutions is essential, evidenced through peer-reviewed manuscripts, open-source contributions, patents, or invited talks. You must have deep expertise in quantum algorithm development or optimization, particularly in computational chemistry, optimization, or machine learning domains. The ideal candidate possesses a strong foundation in quantum computing concepts and can articulate complex technical ideas to diverse audiences—from scientists and engineers to business leaders and community stakeholders. Experience working in teams that identify, define, and solve challenging problems is valued. This role is central to IonQ's mission to translate quantum computing advances into real-world scientific and commercial impact.
