Portal Space Systems is hiring a Senior Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) Engineer to lead the full lifecycle development of the GNC subsystem for flight software. You will serve as the responsible engineer for the GNC subsystem, overseeing architecture, design, and development while providing technical leadership and mentorship to junior GNC engineers.
Key responsibilities include designing and validating GNC algorithms focused on precise pointing and stability control using linear control methods; performing high-fidelity simulations, modeling, and analysis of guidance, navigation, and control systems; leading GNC avionics integration efforts including sensor calibration, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and software validation; supporting mission planning and trajectory design; and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams including software engineers, avionics specialists, propulsion engineers, and mission planners.
You will conduct system performance assessments, stability analysis, and develop risk mitigation strategies. Additional responsibilities include developing and documenting technical specifications, interface control documents, and system architecture designs; providing hands-on support for integration and testing of GNC flight hardware and software; and collaborating with partner organizations on satellite development.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; minimum 5 years of experience in spacecraft and satellite GNC development; demonstrated experience leading full development lifecycle of GNC subsystem in at least one aerospace program; knowledge of Rendezvous and Proximity Operations and Docking; ability to decompose complex tasks and delegate effectively; and proficiency in complex GNC system analyses including kinematics, dynamics, and control systems.
Preferred qualifications include expertise in precise pointing control using linear control methods; proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, Python, or C/C++; experience with avionics integration (IMUs, star trackers, sun sensors, magnetorquers, GPS receivers, reaction wheels); deep understanding of spacecraft dynamics and orbital mechanics; experience with high-fidelity simulation and hardware/software-in-the-loop testing; and familiarity with aerospace industry standards and regulations.
