Astranis builds advanced satellites for high orbits, serving large enterprises, sovereign governments, and the US military. With five satellites on orbit and a backlog exceeding $1 billion in commercial contracts, the company is expanding rapidly.
As a Senior Reliability Test Engineer, you will own reliability across the full lifecycle of complex electromechanical and electronic hardware—from concept through high-rate production and on-orbit operations. You will set reliability targets, design and build test frameworks to validate them, manage labs and tooling, and lead investigations when hardware fails.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and execute qualification and validation test plans (environmental, accelerated life, shock, vibration, thermal cycling, HALT, HASS)
- Design, build, and automate test equipment, fixturing, and instrumentation in Python to maximize throughput
- Establish reliability targets across PCBAs, power electronics, avionics, actuators, batteries, and RF systems
- Review designs and guide teams on design-for-reliability principles before designs lock
- Lead DFMEA and Fault Tree Analysis with cross-functional teams
- Build and maintain reliability models, physics-of-failure predictions, and Weibull analysis
- Serve as escalation point for reliability risks; lead root-cause investigations of high-impact failures
- Coordinate failure analysis using electrical characterization, microscopy, thermal imaging, X-ray, CT, and SEM-EDS
- Analyze field telemetry to identify performance trends and influence upstream priorities
- Define program gate criteria and mentor engineers to raise reliability capability
You should have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or equivalent. Required: 5+ years in reliability, test, or design engineering on high-reliability hardware (or 3+ years with an M.S.). You need hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical systems, sensors, actuators, instrumentation, and DAQ devices. Experience standing up reliability frameworks, generating qualification test requirements, and domain depth in EEE piece parts or avionics is essential.
