Mainspring Energy is seeking a Senior Reaction Controls Engineer to optimize linear generator system performance. Linear generators represent a novel platform that leverages mechanically unconstrained piston motion to efficiently oxidize environmentally friendly fuels (biogas, hydrogen, ammonia) with thermodynamic cycles approaching ideal Otto cycle behavior.
In this role, you will develop and implement physics-based control models and modern control algorithms to improve reliability, extend service intervals, and increase power output and efficiency. You'll work at the intersection of thermodynamics, dynamic systems control, and reaction kinetics.
Key responsibilities include:
- Implement models, algorithms, and continuous-integration tests (MIL, SIL, PIL) in C++
- Develop novel fuel, air, compression ratio, and cooling automation and control strategies
- Design, execute, and analyze experiments using Python on virtual or real generators
- Collaborate with other controls engineers on system designs and architectures
- Debug sensors, actuators, and subsystems; support calibration, verification, and validation
- Analyze complex thermodynamic-mechatronic systems using experimental data to create representative plant models
- Support reliability and manufacturing testing
- Analyze performance data to inform requirements and design decisions
- Support fleet generator operation to enhance reliability and performance
Requirements:
- Multiple years of experience designing, implementing, and testing algorithms in thermodynamic machines (engine control experience is a plus)
- BS in mechanical engineering or related field plus 5 years relevant experience; MS plus 3 years; or Ph.D.
- Driven, self-directed contributor with excellent communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams
