IonQ serves major customers including Amazon Web Services and AstraZeneca, helping them achieve 20x performance improvements in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, and other applications. This Senior R&D Scientist role supports the next phase of growth for IonQ's SNSPD (Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detector) platform based in Geneva. The position targets a highly motivated, PhD-level candidate with strong experimental physics, optics, or engineering background who is driven to rethink and scale testing methodologies for advanced photonic devices. Key responsibilities include leading the development of advanced testing strategies for SNSPD devices with focus on scalability and throughput; rethinking and optimizing existing characterization methodologies, including potential transition to wafer-level testing; developing and operating optical and cryogenic measurement setups for device characterization; analyzing complex datasets to guide device design and process improvements; collaborating with fabrication, packaging, and system teams to ensure test compatibility with manufacturing flows; and documenting methodologies and best practices in structured, transferable formats. Required qualifications include a Master's degree in Physics, Engineering, or closely related field; 3+ years of experience in experimental physics or related field; strong hands-on experimental work or engineering background; proven experience testing and characterizing optical or photonic systems (optoelectronic devices, waveguides, or similar platforms); solid understanding of measurement science and metrology principles with experience designing or improving experimental setups; and proficiency in data analysis and scientific programming.
