Salary: USD 160,000 - 215,000 / annual

Astranis builds advanced satellites for high orbits, serving large enterprises, sovereign governments, and the US military. With five satellites on orbit and a backlog exceeding $1 billion in commercial contracts, the company is expanding its engineering team. As a Senior Radiation Effects Engineer, you will lead the radiation hardness assurance (RHA) strategy for Astranis's electrical systems and avionics. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, requiring you to architect fault-tolerant, radiation-hardened electrical systems capable of operating reliably in high-radiation geostationary and transfer orbit environments. Key responsibilities include: - Architecting and designing fault-tolerant, radiation-hardened electrical systems and avionics for high-radiation environments - Leading simulation and modeling efforts to evaluate GTO and GEO radiation effects on components - Establishing methodologies and driving radiation testing campaigns to upscreen and qualify commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and automotive-grade electrical components - Collaborating with mechanical and structural teams on 3D ray-tracing simulations (e.g., FASTRAD) to optimize shielding versus mass trade-offs - Providing technical mentorship to junior engineers and supporting core electrical engineering activities including schematic capture, PCB layout reviews, and hardware bring-up - Supporting recruiting, technical interviewing, and team development You will need a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, extensive hands-on experience in electrical hardware design for space or high-reliability environments, and deep technical understanding of geostationary radiation degradation mechanisms (TID, SEE, DDD). Expert-level experience with analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit testing and debugging is essential, along with a proven track record leading technical projects and managing risk in high-reliability systems. Bonus qualifications include flight-qualified space radiation design experience, electromagnetic design background, established relationships with radiation test facilities, and proficiency with ECAD tools (Altium Designer) and MCAD workflows (Solidworks). US citizenship or green card required.
