Alaffia Health is a venture-backed Series B healthtech startup based in NYC focused on revolutionizing claims operations for health plans. The company uses expert clinicians and transparent AI to deliver deeper insights, smarter automation, and better outcomes across the claims lifecycle, helping health plans cut wasted spending and reduce administrative burden. In this Senior Data Engineer role, you will own the data infrastructure and reporting systems that power Alaffia's healthcare AI platform. You'll work on building scalable data pipelines, maintaining accurate client deliverables and internal dashboards, and ensuring data quality across the entire claims processing ecosystem. Key responsibilities include: - Ensuring all internal and external reports are delivered on-time and with accuracy, including scheduled client deliverables and operational dashboards - Working closely with stakeholders to produce detailed reporting requirements, documentation, and SOPs with clear metric definitions and data lineage - Executing, maintaining, and progressively automating manual reporting tasks using SQL, scripting, and BI tooling to reduce operational burden - Owning and enhancing report-focused applications in Retool, including building new views, improving UX, and integrating with underlying data sources - Performing data investigations and root-cause analyses when discrepancies, anomalies, or data quality issues occur, and driving resolution - Acting as a subject matter expert on healthcare claims reporting, helping internal and external stakeholders interpret trends, metrics, and exceptions You'll be tackling complex data challenges in medical billing, analytics, and claims automation while leveraging AI agents at scale. The role requires strong collaboration with cross-functional teams and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders. REQUIREMENTS: - 5–10+ years in software engineering, with at least 3-5 years supporting healthcare data, particularly payer claims, eligibility/membership, provider files, and remittances (EDI 837/835) - Deep understanding of payer concepts: benefit structures, adjudication logic, denials, and pricing - Expert-level SQL and data modeling (dimensional and data-vault style modeling for analytics) - Strong Python for ETL/ELT, APIs, and data quality checks - Proficiency with modern data engineering tools: dbt or similar transformation frameworks, and orchestration tools like Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect - Experience building semantic layers and standardized metrics for claims and cost/utilization reporting - Familiarity with REST/JSON, FHIR, and EDI-style feeds - Experience building SaaS applications in healthcare or other highly regulated industries - Deep understanding of statistical modeling and data analytics - Autonomous learning, self-leadership, and ability to own system components while collaborating with SMEs - Exceptional problem-solving skills and ability to work in fast-paced, evolving environments - Excellent communication and collaboration skills - Current authorization to work in the United States (visa sponsorship not available)
