Salary: USD 230,000 - 330,000 / annual
Fanatics Betting & Gaming is seeking a Senior Principal Software Engineer to own the technical strategy and architecture for the engineering team. You will drive the design and development of a highly scalable, fault-tolerant online betting and gaming platform, working on critical areas including sportsbook market integration, risk management, tooling, and backend systems that deliver seamless customer experiences.
In this role, you will set technical direction across the organization, lead architecture for critical cross-cutting systems, and partner with Engineering, Product, and Platform leaders to shape priorities and technical trade-offs. You'll drive the design and execution of complex technical initiatives spanning multiple teams and regulatory constraints, establish engineering standards and design principles, identify and resolve systemic technical risks and performance bottlenecks, and mentor senior engineers while influencing technical decision-making across the organization.
Fanatics is a global digital sports platform with over 100 million sports fans in its database, partnerships with approximately 900 sports properties, and over 22,000 employees. Fanatics Betting & Gaming, launched in 2021, operates the Fanatics Sportsbook (available to 95% of the addressable US online sports bettor market), Fanatics Casino (in Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia), and twenty-two retail sports betting locations including the only sportsbook inside an NFL stadium.
The role is based remotely but includes occasional travel to Fanatics offices (New York, Denver, Leeds, Dublin) and other locations for conferences, events, meetings, and team-building activities. Full-time hires may be invited to "Launching into Better: LIVE," a multi-day cultural immersion in New York City.
**Requirements:**
- 15+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in backend and distributed systems
- Proven ability to set technical direction and influence architecture across multiple teams or domains
- Outstanding system design and architectural judgment in complex, high-scale environments
- Deep experience building secure, reliable, and performant production systems
- Track record of leading large, cross-cutting technical initiatives from design through adoption
- Strong engineering judgment across scalability, operability, maintainability, and technical trade-offs
- Experience building platforms, services, or frameworks that create leverage across an engineering organization
- Excellent communicator with ability to influence at both technical and executive levels
- Must be open to occasional travel to Fanatics offices and other locations
**Preferred Qualifications:**
- Experience in core platform domains such as identity and account systems, payments and transactions, loyalty and promotions, platform engineering, or developer productivity
- Experience with mobile cross-platform technologies (e.g., Kotlin Multiplatform)
- Experience thriving in fast-paced, high-growth startup environments
