Zscaler is seeking a Senior Principal Software Engineer to join the Production Engineering organization within Cloud Infrastructure & Operations. This is a hybrid role (3 days/week in San Jose, CA) with a remote (US) option.
You will define technical vision for broad software domains, lead architecture of major subsystems, and drive complex cross-functional initiatives from concept through execution. The role emphasizes an "automation-first" culture and focuses on building resilient, scalable systems that reduce Mean Time to Mitigate (MTTM) and enhance the scalability of Zscaler's globally distributed, multi-cloud infrastructure protecting over 15 million users.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop highly scalable, performant, and reliable distributed systems in cloud and hybrid environments
- Architect major software components and review/approve critical design proposals with deep consideration for performance, operability, and long-term maintainability
- Champion engineering excellence through strong software design practices, code quality, observability, performance optimization, and operational readiness
- Mentor senior engineers and technical leaders, raise the overall engineering bar, and help attract top technical talent
- Act as a lead Incident Commander (on-call), develop response playbooks, and conduct deep-dive post-incident analyses
You thrive in ambiguity, act with ownership and integrity, are a problem-solver focused on high-impact solutions, and are a high-trust collaborator who values candor and constructive debate. The company emphasizes impact over activity, customer obsession, collaboration, ownership, and accountability. Zscaler positions itself as an AI-forward enterprise leveraging the world's largest security data lake to power its cloud-native Zero Trust Exchange platform.
