Preply is a unicorn edtech platform (Series D, $150M) that connects 100,000+ tutors teaching 90+ languages to learners in 180 countries. The Platform Tribe builds and operates the infrastructure that powers Preply's engineering and serves millions of learners and tutors daily, handling over 20 billion requests per month.
The R&D Automation team is building AI agents and agentic systems to transform how software is developed at Preply. As a Senior Platform Software Engineer, you will combine strong backend software engineering expertise with hands-on AI capabilities to design and deploy agentic workflows across the entire software development lifecycle.
Key responsibilities:
- Design and build AI agents and their harnesses using Python, focusing on agentic software development that automates and augments workflows.
- Create reusable agent capabilities, tools, and integrations that connect AI systems with Preply's engineering ecosystem, codebases, and internal knowledge.
- Develop agentic workflows spanning Engineering, Product, Design, and Data teams—including coding, testing, code review, and broader SDLC automation.
- Rapidly prototype and experiment with new AI capabilities, moving ideas from proof of concept through validation to scalable adoption.
- Design context, orchestration, and verification mechanisms that enable reliable, human-in-the-loop agentic workflows.
- Measure agent usage and value creation using data and feedback to drive continuous improvement.
- Make thoughtful architectural decisions about where AI adds value, where human judgment is essential, and how to integrate the two effectively.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, designers, product, and data teams to understand workflows, drive adoption, and identify new automation opportunities.
You'll work in small, high-ownership teams with significant influence over architecture and platform evolution. Preply's engineering culture is documented in their Engineering Blog, Tech Radar, and YouTube channel.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Approximately 8 years of experience designing and building complex backend software systems.
- Strong software engineering skills with production experience in Python.
- Hands-on experience building AI agents, agentic workflows, or platforms that enable others to build and use AI-powered capabilities.
- Strong understanding of modern agentic AI patterns: context management, tool use, orchestration, and evaluation/verification.
- Experience integrating AI systems with APIs, MCPs, internal tools, codebases, and other engineering systems.
- Proven ability to take new technical ideas from experimentation or proof of concept into robust, scalable solutions.
- Strong experimentation mindset: comfortable with ambiguity, iterating quickly, and using data and feedback to validate approaches.
- Good understanding of distributed systems and backend architecture required to operate AI-powered systems reliably.
- Strong product thinking and ability to connect technical solutions to measurable user outcomes.
- Strong communication skills; minimum C1 English level required.
