Turquoise Health is seeking a Senior Performance Engineer to optimize how their data products interact with large, complex healthcare datasets. This is a fully remote role based in the US, focused on improving the performance and scalability of their Data Platform. You will own performance investigations across the product and data stack, moving from slow queries or poor user experiences to measurable root causes and production improvements. Key responsibilities include designing and evaluating data architecture changes, partnering with Product and engineering teams to optimize product behavior for underlying data characteristics, developing representative benchmarks for important filter and dataset combinations, and measuring query latency, throughput, concurrency, and infrastructure consumption. You'll evaluate the performance impact of upstream dataset changes before production launch, assess future product requests to balance functionality with responsiveness and cost, prototype competing solutions with clear tradeoff analysis, and improve performance instrumentation and monitoring across data-powered experiences. As the Data Product platform becomes a supporting layer for additional products, you'll establish reusable patterns and capabilities. Required qualifications include 5+ years building and optimizing production data systems, data-intensive applications, or analytical products; advanced SQL skills and strong proficiency with Python or another general-purpose language; experience optimizing analytical workloads in column-oriented databases or data warehouses; and experience restructuring data organization or storage to improve application performance. You should be comfortable using query plans, profiling, benchmarks, and production telemetry to diagnose problems, reasoning across system boundaries including databases, APIs, backend services, and client patterns. Bonus experience includes ClickHouse expertise, contributions to data-heavy search/filtering/analytics/reporting products, and familiarity with healthcare data types such as claims, contract rates, revenue cycle, medical billing, or healthcare pricing. Turquoise Health is a Series C price transparency platform for healthcare finance leaders, backed by a16z and other top-tier investors. They power price transparency for 300+ enterprise organizations and are building infrastructure for a more open, efficient healthcare marketplace. The company is remote-first, US-based, and values transparency, empathy, inclusivity, creativity, and ownership.
