Salary: USD 137,600 - 206,400 / annual
Carbon is seeking a Senior Optomechanical Engineer to join the Continuous Improvement team, focused on designing, building, and sustaining additive manufacturing solutions with emphasis on optical systems and production continuity.
You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams (Mechanical, Electrical, Systems) to conceptualize and maintain opto-mechanical designs, including hands-on lab work building and testing optical equipment. Key responsibilities include performing detailed engineering analysis on parts and assemblies—covering optics mounting strategies, tolerance analysis, thermal and stress modeling, manufacturability assessment, and failure mode analysis. You'll collaborate with Operations teams including Sourcing, Planning, Quality, Manufacturing, and Field Service to support released products, troubleshoot assembly and field issues, and interface with vendors on technical matters.
The role requires creating and maintaining technical documentation (drawings, ECOs) to enable knowledge transfer across the organization. You'll be part of the Continuous Improvement team's broader mandate: leading new product introduction with Manufacturing, developing product variations, designing new features, and adapting products for long-term production in a dynamic environment.
Required qualifications: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree with 3+ years of opto-mechanical design and subsystem experience. Strong mechanical engineering foundation with fluency in CAD (Solidworks or equivalent) and solid understanding of dimensioning and tolerancing principles (GD&T). Experience developing specifications for optical/opto-mechanical/optoelectronic assemblies and knowledge of quality metrics including DFMEA and Statistical Process Control. Demonstrated expertise in optical alignment and metrology systems, plus knowledge of precision optical/mechanical alignment tools and techniques.
Nice-to-have skills include scripting/UI development for automated alignment tools with motion control and machine vision, proficiency in MATLAB/LabVIEW/Python, and comfort working in production environments with technicians on the manufacturing floor.
This is an in-office role based in Sunnyvale, California, with 4-5 days expected in office and flexible work-from-home during different project phases. Not eligible for visa sponsorship or relocation assistance. Portfolio required with resume submission.
