Metalenz is a venture-backed optical technology company commercializing metasurface-based optical components for 3D sensing, biometric applications, and consumer electronics. The Senior Optical Metrology Engineer will lead the design, development, and management of metrology systems supporting prototype characterization and validation.
Key responsibilities include: characterizing and calibrating prototype polarization cameras for 3D sensing and biometric applications; determining optimal designs and process conditions using optical techniques (polarimetry, transmission, diffraction, MTF analysis); maintaining and developing metrology automation systems for wafer-scale optical characterization; communicating technical results to design, fabrication, software, and management teams; managing measurement databases for internal customers; transferring metrology techniques to high-volume testing equipment; and collaborating with design and fabrication teams on new products.
You will work hands-on at the optical bench, setting up measurements, aligning lasers and cameras, and designing experimental setups. The role requires proficiency in measurement automation using Python, image processing, and statistical process control. Experience with optical design tools (Zemax, Tracepro, Code V, FRED) and CAD is valued. You'll be part of a small, collaborative optical engineering team in downtown Boston, recently funded with $30M Series B and positioned to scale production of metasurface optics into millions of consumer devices.
Required qualifications: PhD or MS in electrical engineering, physics, or related discipline; 3+ years industrial experience in optics; hands-on optical bench experience; strong communication skills; Python automation proficiency.
