Anduril Industries is a defense technology company transforming U.S. and allied military capabilities through advanced technology. The Imaging team develops state-of-the-art imaging systems across hardware and software, leveraging computer vision, perception, electro-optical, infrared, and sensor data to support warfighters and allies.
You will join the Imaging team as a Senior Optical Engineer focused on design and architecture for an expanding product line at a critical transition from prototyping to production maturity. This is a technical leadership role where you will serve as the optical engineering subject matter expert, working independently and collaborating with senior staff to solve complex interdisciplinary problems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead architecture decisions and optical trades for novel optical systems across broadly defined missions
- Design lenses and optical components for high-performance imaging systems
- Define optical performance requirements given multi-disciplinary engineering constraints
- Transition high-TRL prototype optical assemblies to production fieldable systems
- Design and tolerance complex visible-to-infrared optical systems for ground and airborne applications
- Develop and review test setups, procedures, and data for R&D-to-production transition
- Evaluate and analyze prototype and production optical system performance errors to determine root cause
- Mentor junior staff and demonstrate first-principles problem-solving approaches
REQUIREMENTS:
- BS in Engineering or Physics/Astronomy with concentration in Optics (MS or PhD preferred but not required)
- 5+ years of experience with complex opto-mechanical systems, including optical system design, analysis, alignment, and test
- Experience building wide-field MWIR, LWIR, or multiband imaging optical systems
- Expertise with optical design and analysis software, preferably Zemax or CodeV
- Experience with STOP (Structural, Thermal, and Optical Performance) analysis
- Knowledge of image quality metrics and data analysis methods
- Experience designing diffraction-limited imaging systems in dynamic environments
- Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated first-principles approach to complex opto-mechanical problems
- Optical component testing experience (spectral transmission, interferometry, etc.), optical system alignment and testing (EE, MTF, PSF), and opto-electrical system modeling
- Experience integrating, testing, and verifying/validating optical systems
- Radiometry and stray light analysis experience
- Team leadership and mentoring experience
- Knowledge of optical materials and fabrication methods (molded, polished, diamond-turned optics, microstructures)
