Muon Space is seeking a Senior Mission Lead Systems Engineer to join the Mission Engineering team. In this role, you will serve as the technical lead for a specific Muon mission, owning end-to-end technical success from concept through on-orbit operations. You will work on demanding missions spanning both government and high-assurance commercial programs, including U.S. Government, Department of Defense, and Intelligence Community customers.
Key responsibilities include serving as the ultimate technical authority for your designated mission, leading conceptualization, design, and development while driving critical cross-functional technical trades. You will own the translation of customer objectives into clear, verifiable technical requirements and serve as the primary technical point of contact for customers, partners, and internal stakeholders. Your duties span requirements traceability, verification, and validation; defining mission CONOPS and managing subsystem budgets (power, data, mass, pointing/stability); identifying and mitigating mission risks; and assessing design changes across disciplines.
You will lead design, test readiness, and flight readiness reviews, monitor on-orbit spacecraft and data pipelines to ensure mission success, and foster collaboration with systems, hardware, software, data, ground segment, and operations teams. The role requires tailoring and implementing Muon's mission design process while contributing to continuous process refinement across all missions.
Required qualifications include a B.S. or higher in engineering with 10+ years of experience in complex system, mission architecture, and/or spacecraft design for high-rigor government or demanding commercial customers. You must have demonstrated experience as a technical lead (Chief Engineer, Lead Systems Engineer) on at least one complex system design for USG, DoD, IC, or commercial customers, with direct customer interface experience. Extensive expertise in system modeling, systems analysis, simulations, formal requirements management, system integration, and delivery of complex systems is essential. Strong project management, cross-disciplinary collaboration, communication, and presentation skills are required, along with the ability to rapidly adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Nice-to-have skills include experience with major space programs, space systems development standards, mission assurance standards, and Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC) subsystem requirements and analysis. The position is hybrid, requiring three days per week on-site in San Jose, CA.
