Relativity Space is building the Terran R rocket vehicle to deliver payloads to orbit. The Tooling and Factory Automation team designs and develops manufacturing equipment, fixtures, and automation systems that enable production of rockets and engines at scale.
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer on the Tooling team, you will design high-quality development and production tooling and automation solutions for the Terran vehicle and Aeon engine programs. You'll work on diverse projects ranging from large-scale structural fixtures to custom machines, material handling systems, assembly fixtures, test equipment, and environmental chambers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing tooling and factory automation equipment that directly supports manufacturing operations
- Integrating mechanical design and analysis concepts across multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment
- Applying sound design and drafting standards (ASME Y14.5) to create precise tooling drawings
- Handling a wide range of technical problems across material handling, assembly fixtures, off-loaders, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, and custom machines
- Collaborating closely with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration teams to optimize for safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, lifespan, and maintainability
- Managing projects including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, and equipment commissioning
You'll have significant autonomy to make decisions, propose solutions, and see your work implemented on the factory floor. This role sits at the intersection of design, manufacturing, and automation, directly shaping how rockets and factories are built. The team is embedded within the manufacturing organization and works closely with internal partners to understand root problems and deliver hardware solutions that enable faster production and smarter scaling.
