Salary: USD 183,000 - 198,000 / annual
Muon Space seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of spacecraft instrument mechanisms. You will own the mechanical direction of instrument mechanical subsystems from requirements definition through installation on the launch vehicle, serving as the hardware expert guiding the technical direction of complex electromechanical systems.
Key responsibilities include designing and analyzing moving mechanism assemblies, performing component sizing, subsystem assembly, performance characterization, and lifetime testing. You will create and refine mechanical designs in SolidWorks, manage Design for Manufacturing/Assembly (DFM/DFA) efforts to support continuous improvement and volume production, and lead mechanical portions of internal and external design reviews.
You will support environmental testing campaigns including vibration and thermal-vacuum (TVAC) testing, collaborate with structural, thermal, instrument, and spacecraft systems engineers, and interface with AI&T and production teams. The role involves significant hands-on lab work and requires managing external vendors for part prototyping and development.
As an early-stage startup with a small team, breadth is critical. You will dive into structural analysis, dynamics, thermal design, supplier management, and the full lifecycle of electromechanical products. You'll work cross-functionally to understand requirements, execute designs, and deliver robust hardware on schedule.
Required: 8+ years designing, building, and testing high-reliability hardware; B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field; proficiency in SolidWorks; mastery of drawings, GD&T, BOMs, FAIs, tolerance budgets, and mass budgets; experience with ECO/DCO processes and PLM systems; demonstrated proficiency leading mechanical design for complex electromechanical systems; experience technically leading or managing a small team; extensive documentation capabilities; vendor management experience; root cause analysis skills; excellent communication and cross-functional coordination; experience with system integration and delivery of complex hardware/software systems.
Preferred: flight heritage (hardware successfully operated in space); experience optimizing and maturing existing designs; familiarity with satellite payloads and mission-level mechanical integration; experience with deployable hardware; ADCS component experience; structural analysis and environmental testing experience; thermal management systems knowledge; large assembly management in SolidWorks PDM; Python/MATLAB skills; project management experience; vendor qualification experience; optomechanical subsystem experience; cleanroom environment experience.
