Salary: USD 183,000 - 198,000 / annual
Muon Space, a LEO satellite constellation provider founded in 2021, seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own the mechanical design and development of spacecraft components and systems. You will drive the full lifecycle of component design—from requirements definition through launch vehicle integration—collaborating closely with structural, thermal, electrical, and other engineering disciplines to deliver flight-ready hardware on schedule.
As a core member of a lean, early-stage team, you will take on broad technical responsibilities spanning structural analysis, dynamics, thermal design, supplier management, and electromechanical product development. Key responsibilities include: understanding Muon's spacecraft platforms and tailoring components to mission needs; designing, building, and testing mission-specific components and payloads; creating and refining mechanical designs in SolidWorks; developing reusable platform components; leading mechanical design reviews; coordinating with structural and thermal engineers; managing environmental testing campaigns (vibration, TVAC, etc.); and writing mission-specific documentation and build procedures.
Required qualifications: 8+ years designing, building, and testing high-reliability hardware; B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field; proficiency in SolidWorks for component and assembly design; mastery of engineering drawings, GD&T, BOMs, FAIs, tolerance budgets, and mass budgets; experience with ECO/DCO processes and PLM systems; demonstrated leadership of complex electromechanical system design; experience technically leading or managing small engineering teams; strong documentation skills (build procedures, test plans, design trades, DOEs); vendor management experience; and excellent cross-functional communication.
Nice-to-have skills include flight heritage (hardware successfully operated in space), design optimization and maturation experience, satellite payload and mechanical integration familiarity, deployable hardware experience (solar arrays, antennas, mechanisms), ADCS component knowledge, structural analysis tools (FEMAP, ANSYS), thermal management systems expertise, SolidWorks PDM and PLM systems (Duro), Python/MATLAB, project management experience, and vendor qualification expertise.
The role is hybrid, requiring three days per week on-site in San Jose. Muon's state-of-the-art Silicon Valley facility is optimized for spacecraft manufacturing and rapid payload integration.
