Relativity Space is building the Terran R rocket using advanced 3D printing manufacturing to serve the growing demand for launch capacity. The Structures and Mechanisms team owns the full design, build, and test lifecycle of Terran R's integrated structures and flight mechanisms, with hands-on hardware ownership and direct visibility to the factory floor. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer specializing in Mechanisms, you will guide the design of critical flight systems including stage separation, payload deployment, aero control features, and landing gear. You'll work across the full design cycle—from conceptualization and trade studies through design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing. The role emphasizes leveraging Relativity's additive manufacturing process and design freedom to create innovative solutions. Key responsibilities include: - Leading mechanism design for stage separation, fairing deployment, landing gear, and aero surface actuation systems - Defining design criteria and subsystem requirements - Reviewing static and dynamic load inputs, material properties, and manufacturing process constraints - Conducting trade studies on competing design concepts and presenting recommendations to leadership - Collaborating with structures, avionics, fluids, vehicle design, test, loads, and manufacturing teams - Integrating subsystems within the printed primary structure - Supporting additive process development to enable advanced manufacturing capabilities - Delivering designs on time and budget while maintaining flight safety and performance margins You'll have autonomy and ownership at every level, solving novel problems that haven't been solved before. This is an early-stage opportunity where your technical decisions directly impact the product, process, and company culture. The role combines creative problem-solving with rigorous engineering discipline in a fast-moving, high-impact environment.
