Rocket Lab is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the development of innovative electromechanical systems for satellite separation mechanisms at their Silver Spring, Maryland facility. In this role, you will own the full lifecycle of complex space mechanisms—from concept through production—on aggressive timelines.
Key responsibilities include designing mechanisms and structures using CAD and FEA analysis, leading requirements definition and traceability, and ensuring compliance and system validation. You will prepare technical documentation including system design descriptions, interface control documents, and requirements verification matrices. You'll manage development schedules, conduct project milestone reviews, and lead technical interchange meetings with internal stakeholders and external partners.
The role involves cross-functional collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure proper functionality across system interfaces. You will mentor other engineers, support business development proposals, and contribute to continuous improvements in the team's engineering approach and best practices. Approximately 10% travel to suppliers, customers, and other Rocket Lab sites is expected.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field and 5+ years of aerospace mechanical development experience. You must be proficient in CAD and FEA, with thorough understanding of aerospace standards, environments, verification tests, and requirements. Experience managing complex projects across organizational teams is essential.
Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree in engineering, proficiency in NX CAD and Simcenter FEA software, strong task management and communication skills, and experience adapting to changing priorities and resolving blockers quickly.
