Thea Energy is developing next-generation fusion energy technology based on stellarator physics breakthroughs. The company is commercializing a novel approach using computer-controlled planar coil arrays to replace complex modular magnets, aiming to create a zero-emission, limitless energy source.
In this Senior Mechanical Engineer role, you will own the design and development of primary and secondary mechanical fusion components and subsystems. You will work cross-functionally with core system-level development teams to define prototyping requirements and produce mechanical engineering designs, drawings, specifications, and parameters from first principles with appropriate tolerances for vendor quoting and manufacturing.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop mechanical fusion components and subsystems with full ownership
- Collaborate with system-level teams on prototyping requirements
- Create detailed mechanical designs, drawings, and specifications suitable for manufacturing
- Design assembly tooling
- Perform thermal, structural, and electromagnetic analysis using Ansys and COMSOL
- Apply design-for-manufacturing principles and support first builds
- Implement tooling and manufacturing processes
- Design and execute qualification testing
- Track progress against program goals and milestones
- Mentor junior engineers on problem decomposition and design review
- Communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment where you will guide complex component and system design while working to aggressive deadlines.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or related field (minimum)
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience
- Extensive experience as a lead designing, building, and commissioning custom systems
- Proficiency with CAD software (Solidworks, CATIA, NX, or equivalent)
- Experience managing complex assemblies with multiple contributors
- Experience specifying machining, welding, and/or fabrication requirements
- Ability to mentor junior engineers in decomposing complex problems and reviewing their work
- Ability to take initiative and guide design and analysis of complex components and systems
- Familiarity with GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and drawing standards
- Experience owning systems or complex sub-systems
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to execute in fast-paced, rapidly changing environments
- Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines
Note: The posting indicates it is not necessary to meet all skillsets listed; candidates are encouraged to explain why they would be a strong fit even if some experience gaps exist.
