Salary: USD 135,000 - 170,000 / annual

Sofar Ocean is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design, develop, and manufacture hardware for ocean sensing networks. You will own mechanical designs across the full product lifecycle—from early system architecture and prototyping through testing, deployment, and manufacturing transition. Key responsibilities include: - Owning mechanical designs and subassemblies from concept through CAD, prototyping, validation, and production - Designing reliable hardware for harsh marine environments, balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, and schedule - Building, testing, and debugging prototypes and production hardware, using failure analysis to drive improvements - Leading mechanical design reviews and collaborating with electrical, firmware, software, and manufacturing engineers on integrated systems - Working directly with suppliers, machine shops, vendors, and contract manufacturers to develop and scale parts and assemblies - Collaborating across the company and occasionally with customers to develop new marine sensing applications and participate in field testing and ocean deployments Required qualifications: - 5+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience designing hardware for marine, robotics, aerospace, automotive, or other demanding environments - Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (Onshape or SolidWorks preferred) with experience owning designs from concept through production - Strong mechanical fundamentals including materials and process selection, structural analysis, fatigue, tolerancing, GD&T, and engineering drawings - Experience building, testing, debugging, and iterating on physical hardware - Strong engineering judgment and ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams Bonus qualifications include marine/subsea design experience, FEA expertise, sensor integration experience, hands-on machining/fabrication, startup experience, and passion for ocean science.
