Heirloom is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own the design and execution of complex mechanical subsystems for their core carbon removal technology. This high-ownership individual contributor role spans early-stage R&D through NPI (New Product Introduction) and site-scale deployment, requiring strong engineering fundamentals and a bias toward practical, manufacturable solutions. Key responsibilities include: - Own end-to-end design of complex mechanical subsystems from requirements definition through validation, production ramp, and deployment - Drive subsystem performance across cost, reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability with direct impact on $/ton CO₂ economics - Design low and high-volume components using sheet metal stamping, casting, roll forming, and extrusions - Lead design trade studies using first-principles analysis, data-driven methods, and engineering judgment - Design and develop product-level test equipment, fixtures, and validation strategies supporting Design for Reliability (DfR) - Partner with suppliers, equipment operators, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to ensure designs are robust and production-ready - Generate detailed 2D drawings with proper GD&T aligned with production and inspection standards - Support rapid prototyping and iterative development cycles while maintaining NPI rigor - Act as technical leader by mentoring peers, driving best practices, and raising engineering quality standards Required qualifications: - 5+ years designing and delivering products through full lifecycle from concept to production - Strong passion for product design and solving complex engineering problems with simple, robust solutions - Excellent engineering fundamentals with ability to apply first principles, modeling, and data to real-world decisions - Experience applying Design for Reliability principles including failure mode identification, reliability modeling, and accelerated life testing - Demonstrated ability to lead technically complex projects with minimal supervision - Proven track record working cross-functionally to balance competing requirements - Strong sense of ownership, accountability, and follow-through Bonus experience includes hands-on sheet metal and weldment design, random vibration and fatigue testing, metallurgy, PLM systems, and NX CAD software.
