Berkshire Grey is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own complex mechanical projects and major product areas for the Stride platform, an industrial automation and material-handling system. You will drive the full lifecycle from problem definition through design, analysis, prototyping, validation, documentation, release, and production support.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop deep system-level understanding of the Stride product, including mechanical systems and their interactions with controls, electrical hardware, manufacturing, installation, and service.
- Own end-to-end mechanical projects or subsystems, managing complexity across reliability, safety, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability.
- Lead structured root-cause analysis investigations into reliability and performance issues, using testing, field data, and engineering judgment to identify and solve underlying problems.
- Evaluate how proposed changes ripple across the broader product ecosystem.
- Support platform adaptation for new customers, applications, environments, and market segments.
- Provide technical direction for mechanical projects and subsystem work, mentoring less-experienced engineers and strengthening team technical practices.
- Create and maintain high-quality engineering documentation: requirements, calculations, drawings, BOMs, test plans, design reviews, and engineering change orders.
- Collaborate closely with manufacturing, sourcing, quality, controls, electrical engineering, installation, service, and product management.
- Communicate technical risks, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
- Review peer work and contribute to a collaborative, accountable engineering culture.
You will thrive if you prefer improving and evolving a real, fielded product over greenfield work; naturally think systemically about how changes affect the whole product; enjoy finding patterns across field issues and turning them into durable improvements; and take satisfaction in closing the loop from design through documentation to production support.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and supporting complex mechanical or electromechanical products.
- Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals: mechanisms, structural design, materials, tolerancing, manufacturing processes, component selection.
- Demonstrated ability to independently investigate ambiguous technical problems and bring them to documented, production-ready resolution.
- Experience improving product reliability through root-cause analysis, testing, and design changes.
- System-level thinking: ability to recognize how changes in one area affect the rest of the product.
- Sound engineering judgment and ability to make practical tradeoffs among technical performance, risk, cost, schedule, and complexity.
- Experience taking designs through release and change-control processes (drawings, BOMs, design reviews, validation, engineering changes).
- Willingness to own both highly technical work and detailed documentation.
- Ability to work autonomously while building alignment in multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with industrial automation, material-handling equipment, robotics, conveyors, or complex machinery.
- Experience supporting products deployed in customer or production environments.
- Familiarity with reliability engineering methods, failure analysis, risk assessment, and design verification.
- Experience designing for manufacturing, assembly, installation, maintenance, and field service.
- Experience with SolidWorks, PDM/PLM systems, and formal engineering change-control processes.
- Experience mentoring engineers or improving team processes, tools, or technical standards.
