Astranis builds advanced satellites for high orbits, serving large enterprises, sovereign governments, and the US military. The company has five satellites on orbit with a backlog exceeding $1 billion in commercial contracts. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will own the complete lifecycle of various spacecraft subsystems, from incremental improvements to introducing new systems. You will mentor and train junior mechanical engineers on projects, bringing strong problem-solving abilities, hands-on testing skills, and aerospace engineering experience.
Key responsibilities include: complete ownership of product outcomes for spaceflight hardware; developing requirements for subsystems and components including loads, interfaces, and functional requirements; performing mechanical design and analysis of complex assemblies to satisfy launch and on-orbit requirements; developing and defining design best practices for future programs; managing system-level schedule and integration requirements while coordinating with Assembly, Integration, and Test teams; and assisting in recruiting and hiring additional team members.
Required qualifications: B.S. or M.S. in mechanical or aerospace engineering (or equivalent); 4–15+ years of mechanical design experience; strong CAD design skills (Solidworks) and Finite Element analysis expertise (Femap, Ansys); experience with GD&T and designing for manufacturability; demonstrated ability to personally design, evaluate, and procure complex mechanical assemblies with 30–40 components in aerospace or similar industries; passion for hardware development in fast-paced environments; and proven leadership mentoring junior engineers.
Bonus qualifications include experience defining vibration environments and running mechanical testing on spacecraft; running development programs while delegating to small teams; and synthesizing requirements and flowing them down to sub-scale verification builds and testing. Astranis offers competitive base salary, significant equity via incentive stock options, company-subsidized healthcare, disability and life insurance, 401(k) retirement planning, flexible PTO, and on-site catered meals.
