Anduril Industries, a defense technology company, is seeking a Senior Materials Engineer specializing in composites to join its rapidly expanding Materials Engineering team. This role supports 20+ active programs spanning autonomous aircraft, submarines, missiles, and solid rocket motors. You will serve as a materials authority across Anduril's product portfolio, providing critical expertise in structural composites and bonded structures as the company scales from prototype to high-rate production.
Key responsibilities include generating material allowables and design values from mechanical test data to support structural analysis across multiple programs. You will author and maintain material and process specifications, building out Anduril's composite material toolbox. The role involves supporting material selection trades, evaluating composite systems for performance, manufacturability, cost, and scalability. You will design and execute statistically-driven test plans and characterization campaigns from coupon through component level, and support the transition from thermoset to thermoplastic composite processes to enable high-rate production.
You'll provide materials and process guidance to design engineers, review drawings, support structural analysis, and advise on design for manufacturability. The position includes leading failure analyses and root cause corrective action investigations for composite material-related issues, partnering with manufacturing engineering to troubleshoot production issues and support fabrication trials. You will coordinate with laboratory staff on materials characterization activities including mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and quality validation, support supplier development and qualification, and work with quality assurance to drive specification compliance.
Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree or higher in Materials Science, Composites Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field, with 5-7 years of composite materials and process engineering experience in aerospace, defense, automotive, or related industries. You must have strong understanding of composite material systems (thermoset and thermoplastic matrices with continuous/discontinuous fiber reinforcement), hands-on experience with manufacturing processes (prepreg layup, autoclave, RTM, heated press molding, stamp forming, filament winding), and experience generating material properties through mechanical testing per ASTM standards. Strong technical writing skills, cross-functional collaboration ability, and eligibility to obtain a US security clearance are required.
Preferred qualifications include experience with thermoplastic composite materials and processes, working knowledge of CMH-17 (Composite Materials Handbook), and experience supporting structural analysis teams with lamina/laminate level material properties.
